On this day, fifteen years ago, we lost the Jai Alai Building, one of Manila’s crown jewels and once considered the most beautiful Art Deco building in Asia. Today, fifteen years later, the El Hogar Building, one of the few remaining evidences of the city’s grandest era and a survivor of 1945 Battle of Manila, is now in the midst of uncertainties as its owner, the Ritz Premiere Corporation plan to demolish this majestic edifice.
Our stand in the Escolta Revival Movement is simple: we cannot afford to lose another important structure in the capital city. We ask everyone to help us make the owners more aware of the advantages of saving and preserving their priced property. Help us enlighten them that development must not compromise a city’s identity. Help us make them realize that the decision to save and preserve El Hogar will earn them utmost respect and recognition, not just from today’s society but from all culture-loving Filipinos in the future.
Today, fifteen years after Jai Alai’s demolition, we call all individuals and organizations to join us in this endeavor.
